Over the past few decades, newborn circumcisions, a procedure that was once a standard practice in a majority of U.S. hospitals, has become such a hot-button issue that the national rate has dropped from about 65 percent to 58 percent. However, while a cultural groundswell against newborn circumcision has gained traction among many Americans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stepped forward with a list of guidelines, recommending that doctors at least inform boys and men who have not been circumcised about the risks and benefits of the procedure.
According to the CDC, the benefits of circumcision includes reduced risk of catching or spreading sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and the human papillomavirus, as well as reduced risk of infections and conditions that cause the inability to retract the foreskin.
Common Reasons for Adult Circumcision
At Comprehensive Urology, Dr. Kia Michel and his team of skilled urologists understand that circumcision is a sensitive topic and have performed adult male circumcisions for many patients based on the following cosmetic, hygienic, and medical reasons:
- Phimosis – The foreskin is too narrow to be retracted, resulting in tears, infections, and other painful complications.
- Frequent UTI – A build-up of bacteria and urine in the foreskin contributes to urinary tract infections.
- Frenular Tears – The tissue called the frenulum at the base of the foreskin is too short and prevents normal retraction of the foreskin, leading to tears, bleeding, infections and other painful complications.
- Balanitis – A painful infection that is most often caused by poor hygiene that causes the foreskin and/or head of the penis to swell.
- Cosmetic Reasons – Discoloration, abnormalities, scar tissues, or other conditions of the foreskin can detract from the cosmetic appearance of the penis when erect.
- Lichen Sclerosus of the Penis – A skin condition in which the foreskin becomes pale and thin, resulting in itching, discomfort, pain, wrinkleds patches, and blistering or lesions in severe cases.
