Studies Show How Smoking Increases Risks for Bladder Cancer

There is a definite link between smoking and more harmful health effects, according to two recent studies showcased at the annual Society for Urologic Oncology Conference. Studies by the international group of investigators have shown that after diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer, there are significant increased risks of recurrence, disease progression, and survival.

In the urinary tract, if cells begin to grow abnormally and uncontrollably, bladder cancer results which then creates a tumor that can interrupt the urinary’s systems function and additionally disperse malignant cells throughout the body. It has been known that smoking has been correlated as a risk factor for bladder cancer, but these studies provide conclusive information of a dose-response relationship.

Results of Study: Increased Risk of Poor Outcomes From Smoking

Bladder Cancer Los AngelesThere were two studies, the first included 2,043 patients with bladder cancer and this group underwent transurethral resection treatment for the bladder. The second group consisted of 1,506 patients who underwent a radical cystectomy treatment for the bladder. For both cases, there were extensive smoking histories taken that included a daily average number of cigarettes, the duration of smoking, and lastly when smoking ceased for those who quit.

The study results showed that with smoking exposure for both current and former smokers, there were strong correlations of recurrence of disease, tumor progression into the advanced stage, and metastasis, in addition to overall mortality. The worst results came from smokers who were long-term.

For smokers who stopped smoking 10 years or more before diagnosis, there was a reduced risk of disease recurrence and progression, closely related to that of non-smokers.
