Even though prostate cancer is one of the most common diseases in men, there are ways to help avoid the condition. By eating right, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and exercising often, patients can reduce the chance of developing the disease. The Prostate Cancer Institute of LA have come up with four ways to help avoid prostate cancer, and although these methods are not foolproof, they can help lower the risk of cancer and make patients feel active, healthy, and happy.

Ways to Help Prevent Prostate Carcinoma
1. Eat a nutritious diet
Changing your eating habits and diet can reduce the risk of cancer. Two diets which are commonly associated with longevity and good health are traditional Japanese and Mediterranean diets. Both diets, in addition to being healthy and nutritious, are rich in fish and vegetables and low in red meats. Specific foods which are believed to be effective against cancer are tomatoes, grapes, and fruits and vegetables in general. So if you’re concerned about developing prostate cancer, try eating a lot of tomatoes and tomato-based products (lycopene, an antioxidant found in tomatoes, may help prevent the disease).

2. Don’t smoke
It’s obvious that smoking is bad for your lungs, but did you know that smoking can increase the risk of prostate cancer as well? That’s because cigarette smoke contains carcinogens responsible for promoting the growth of cancer in the body. As if you needed another reason to quit!
3. Exercise Daily
Exercise improves blood circulation, boosts the immune system, and generally makes us feel better. Frequent exercise has also been shown to lower the risk of cancer in patients. By performing simple exercises every day or every-other day, patients can drastically reduce the chances of developing prostate carcinoma. Next time you’re out of the house, try jogging, swimming, or walking. Though it doesn’t have to be strenuous activity, it helps if patients gradually increase the intensity of exercise over the course of a few days.
4. Get screened
The best and most effective way to prevent cancer is the one method men tend to forget. Being screened early and often can help doctors identify and treat the disease before it becomes too serious. Like all forms of cancer, prostate carcinoma is best treated early. During a screening, urologists will take tissue samples from the prostate. These samples are then examined for traces of cancer. Don’t take any chances with your health! Schedule a screening today!
