There are several factors that can lead to the formation of kidney stones, and in many cases they are small enough to remain undetected. Sometimes they can be asymptomatic (meaning they don’t present any symptoms) for months or in some cases years before the sufferer begins to experience issues.
Over 50% of kidney stone formation results from severe dehydration. They can also arise from certain genetic or medical conditions, or even as a side effect of certain medications.

Five Signs You May Need to Seek Kidney Stone Treatment
As previously stated, clear symptoms are not always present in every patient, but some of the most common signs of kidney stones include:
Pain
The pain associated with kidney stones can be excruciating, and can present in the lower back or side and radiate across the abdomen or groin, depending on the sufferer. It can either be consistent or radiate in waves as the stones pass. However, pain is not always severe, and as with any intense pain that persists or does not subside over time, it’s always best to consult a urologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Nausea and Vomiting
In cases where pain is very intense (some sufferers have compared it to the agony of childbirth!) nausea and vomiting can occur and is sometimes treated with pain medication or even IV fluids and antiemetics.
Fever and Chills
The presence of fever and or chills, even in cases where the pain is not particularly severe, can be sign of an infection and should be taken very seriously. Kidney stone sufferers with fever or chills should seek immediate medical attention.
Blood in Urine
Hematuria, or blood in the urine, occurs when the stones scrape against the ureters as they pass through the urinary tract. Although it is very frightening to see, it is common and not a serious issue, unless it becomes difficult to void.
Changes in Urine
Cloudy or foul smelling urine can be a symptom of infection, either as a result of kidney stones or other conditions and should be immediately brought to the attention of a doctor.
